Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started at KOMA?

Every new student begins with an Program Placement Call.

During this short consultation, we learn about goals, age, and readiness, answer your questions, and determine if KOMA is the right fit.During this structured session, we evaluate focus, effort, and readiness while introducing you or your child to our training environment.

Following the assessment, we recommend the appropriate program and outline the next steps for enrollment.

How can Ko Martial Arts help students grow?

Ko Martial Arts develops confidence, focus, discipline, resilience, and leadership while improving strength, coordination, and overall fitness.

Through structured progression and clear expectations, students learn how to set goals, follow through, and handle challenges with composure.

Unlike traditional sports, our programs emphasize personal growth alongside physical skill. Students build respect, responsibility, and leadership habits that carry into school, relationships, and everyday life.

If you are unsure which program is the right fit, every new family begins with a Program Placement Call so we can determine the best next step.

How many classes can you take each week?

Class frequency depends on the program and the student’s age, goals, and readiness.

Most students attend two classes per week, which allows for consistent progress without burnout. Some programs offer additional training options, while others are intentionally structured to prioritize recovery and focus.

During your Program Placement Call, we will recommend the ideal training schedule based on availability and long term goals.

Do you have to attend the same class time every week?

We encourage consistency, but families are not locked into one class time. Most programs offer multiple class options each week, allowing you to choose the times that work best for your schedule.

During your Program Placement Call, we will help you identify a consistent schedule that supports steady progress.

How long are classes?

Most group classes are 45 minutes long. Class length is intentionally designed to keep students focused, engaged, and progressing without unnecessary downtime.

Private lessons are also available and typically run 20-30 minutes, allowing for more individualized instruction when appropriate.

How young can someone start classes?

Our programs begin as early as age three. We also work with older students and adults who are starting for the first time.

Placement is based on age, readiness, and focus. Every new student begins with a Program Placement Call, followed by a 20 Minute Readiness Assessment to determine the appropriate starting point.

How is Taekwondo different than Karate?

Taekwondo and Karate are both traditional martial arts, but they differ in emphasis and training approach.

Taekwondo, which originated in Korea, places a strong focus on kicking, balance, and dynamic movement. Karate, which originated in Japan, emphasizes hand strikes, stances, and close range techniques.

At Ko Martial Arts, our foundation is Taekwondo, combined with age appropriate self defense concepts to help students build coordination, confidence, discipline, and practical awareness.

How long does it take to become a Black Belt at KO Martial Arts?

At Ko Martial Arts, becoming a black belt is a meaningful achievement that reflects consistency, growth, and character development—not just time spent in class.

For students who begin at age 7 or older, the journey to first degree black belt typically takes about 3 years, or 10 belt levels, when training consistently.

The youngest age a student may earn a black belt at Ko Martial Arts is 10 years old, regardless of when they begin.

Students ages 3–6 start in our Super Tykes program, where the focus is on building confidence, coordination, focus, and comfort in a class environment. When they transition into our core program at age 7, they begin the structured belt system and follow the same progression toward black belt.

Every student progresses at their own pace, and advancement is based on readiness, effort, and consistency—not shortcuts.

Do you work with students who have special needs?

Yes. We work with students with a wide range of learning, attention, sensory, and developmental needs.

This is deeply personal to our team. Master Ko is the parent of a child on the autism spectrum, and that perspective has shaped how we approach instruction, structure, and communication.

Many students with special needs are successful in our group classes with the right expectations and support. For students who are not yet ready for a group setting, we also offer one on one instruction through our Solo Program, which allows us to meet the student where they are and build readiness over time.

Every student begins with a Program Placement Call, where we learn more about your child and discuss the best starting option to create a positive and successful experience.

Am I too old to start martial arts?

No. Martial arts can be started at any age.

At Ko Martial Arts, we offer adult programs designed to improve strength, mobility, coordination, and long-term health in a supportive, structured environment. Many adults appreciate that our classes provide more than just a workout—they offer accountability, progression, and a strong sense of community.

If your child is already training at KOMA, many parents enjoy the opportunity to train alongside them, building discipline and consistency together as a family.

Every adult begins with a Program Placement Call, where we discuss goals, experience level, and the best starting option.

How much does it cost?

Tuition begins at $299 per month for two classes per week. Final tuition depends on age, program placement, and training frequency.

At Ko Martial Arts, every new student begins with a Program Placement Call to determine the appropriate program and schedule.

Following the call, students complete a 20 Minute Readiness Assessment, after which we review tuition options clearly and transparently so families can make a confident decision.
